“Yes… Miami. No. Probably not Miami,” she murmurs, sunk in thought.

The limousine travels along quiet, frozen roads, her words conjuring the beauty of summer.

No matter how much I try, she is still the star of my imagination, so I tone down my fantasy and listen to her.

“Why not?”

“It’s probably too expensive for me. I want to renovate my old place first. Get rid of everything in the attic and turn it into something else. I was thinking about something like a home office. Or a tiny retreat for me when I want to read a book and sleep in the afternoon. Or maybe a Stars Room like the one in your house.”

Her new idea makes her flick her eyes to me. She beams with glee, her mind glimpsing into the future.

“I want a skylight like yours. A big bed, lots of pillows, and a bottle of that minty liquor in a small bar nearby, and that’s it.”

I don’t even make a cameo appearance in her film. To say I’m disappointed doesn’t even begin to describe it.

I’m crushed, and I’d laugh, but I don’t want to give myself away.

“Mm-hmm…” I murmur politely, encouraging her to continue.

Wide-eyed, she examines that possibility, a smile clinging to her lips, akin to my shaken hope that’s holding onto the elusive story called her future life.

“Yes… It would be perfect. And I could get a cat.”

I almost choke.

The cat now throws me for a loop. I must grimace or something. Unintentionally. I love animals. They are some of the greatest things in life.

But a cat??

A cat gets to curl up in her lap while I’m dying to put my head between her legs.

A cat gets to see her naked, while I can’t keep my cock in check every time I see her skin or imagine her naked under her clothes.

A cat gets to tickle her face with his whiskers, while I’d love to tickle her with my mouth.

And a cat will sleep with her day and night. Every time she’d hit the bed, bam, the cat would be there too.

“You don’t like cats?” she asks, her brow furrowed.

“I adore cats.”

She looks at me as if smelling a lie.

“Maybe a dog…” she murmurs.

Now I smell a trap.

She wants to know whether I’m here or my mind has wandered off, and I’m only a warm body sitting next to her.

“Dogs make the best friends,” I comment.

She’s not impressed with my platitude, but cracks a smile.

“You have no opinion on this.”

I have tons of opinions.

“You’ve never had a pet,” she challenges me.

“True. But I love them. It’s just that I didn’t have the right kind of life for them to fit in.”

She ponders.

“Yes. Maybe it’s too early for a pet,” she admits.

I release a quiet sigh of relief while she moves her eyes away from me, going back to the drawing board, embracing her plans for the future and murmuring more things about Miami.

“Perhaps one of those stylish apartments in a skyscraper.”

I swallow thickly.

“You know…” she murmurs.

She’s not really talking to me.
